I bought a Mac Pro 3,1 recently but the case was damaged in shipping. Since everything else works perfectly I picked up a "dead" Mac Pro 1,1 to use as a case donor, but as it turns out the cases aren't actually compatible between the two models and the 1,1 actually works (I guess the seller just didn't want to bother testing it). As I said the 3,1 works perfectly so I would just try to ignore the damage, but it won't stand up straight and the optical drive area is dented making the drive tray catch on it (one of my main projects at the moment is digitizing my huge DVD collection so this relatively minor annoyance is starting to get on my nerves).
I'm looking to trade one or both computers in the Houston, TX area. At the moment I'm not interested in dealing with shipping because it is so expensive and it's hard to ship these computers safely. Option A: I'd trade the Mac Pro 1,1 for a pristine Mac Pro 3,1 case or a dead computer with a pristine case. The 1,1 is a dual 2.66ghz (quad core) and has 3gb of RAM (technically 4gb installed, but one of the 512mb chips is iffy and knocks out the last 1gb half the time). There is no video card and no hard drive, and only one hard drive tray with no screws. It does have a SuperDrive installed. There is no AirPort or Bluetooth currently installed. It has some scuffs and scratches, but the case is structurally sound with only one minor dent. Option B: alternately I'd prefer to trade both computers for a newer/better model. I'd be most interested in a 4,1 (ideally eight-core) or any 5,1. I'd also consider a trade for a pristine 3.2ghz eight-core 3,1 with an upgraded video card. If you've got a 4,1 or 5,1 it should have at least some RAM (although the as little as 4gb would be fine) and a video card (any card would be acceptable). It doesn't need a hard drive, but it does need at least one drive tray with screws. If it's a 4,1 the case should be in decent shape (scuffs, scratches, and even minor dents are fine as long as it stands up straight and both optical drive doors operate smoothly) and a 5,1 could even be pretty banged up as long as the drive doors operate smoothly. My 3,1 is a dual 2.8ghz (eight-core) model with 16gb of 667mhz RAM, SuperDrive, and a Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card (although if your Mac Pro doesn't come with a graphics card I will keep this one). It has Bluetooth but no AirPort. It has considerable structural damage, most notably on the front foot (it does still stand up, but it is tilted and wobbly) as well as the front panel (the optical drive doors can be manually opened but they won't spring back, they are too stiff for the drive itself to open them, and sometimes the drive gets stuck on the opening when going in and out). All four hard drive sleds are in place but three screws are missing from #4 and no drives are installed. If you are in the Houston area and are interested in a trade let me know. I may have other stuff to throw in if the two Mac Pros aren't enough (mainly PowerPC equipment/parts, possibly a few other things). I'd also consider selling the 1,1 but again only in the Houston area, as after seeing what happened to my 3,1 I'd rather not deal with shipping.
