some of the most bitter fighting was for the tractor
plant[dzerhezinsky] in the north of the city.since invasion the plant had
been one of the biggest producers of the T-34 in the U.S.S.R.. one month
under fire the plant produced nearly 400 tanks; during the same month the
workers at the plant and every other were organised into a ' WORKERS MILITIA
'.everyone who enlisted was given a red armband,a rifle; and a bandolier of
ammunition.the month the germans reached the tractor plant they met strong
resistance;one of the toughest defenders of the factory was OLGA KOVALOVA[a
foul mouthed veteran who had worked with the men for 20 years]
this veteran had become russia's first woman steel founder;her
battalion commander tried to get rid of her.insisting that it was no place
for a lady; but she stayed and continued to bawl at any of the men that she
considered lazy or ineffective.
AFTER AN ATTACK THE NOBLE LADY WAS FOUND DEAD
