Configure stops with error:
configureL error: gcc must provide the header
Host Proc Arch = i686
Gcc -version = 4.1.2
Cupid.h is in /mnt/lfs/tools/lib/gcc/i686-lfs-linux-gnu/4.6.1/include/cupid.h
What do I need to do to fix this?

Just download any fairly recent distro...Fedora, Ubuntu, etc...and if
needed install whatever additional

There's the gentoo live dvd available at the bottom of this page:
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml
it has current up-to-date tools to build LFS.
