introduced, a fellow maintainer picked up the patch from this issue and applied
it to lilypond-2.18.2 and it fixed the problem. Strangely enough 2.18.2 worked
with gcc 6

Yes, I think so.
Alternatively there is a way to install Guile 1.8 to LilyDev 5.2.
Another solution is to use Ubuntu 16.04 which has Pango 1.38.1 and Guile 1.8.
