How, then, do you invoke ly2dvi? ly2dvi is just a script, and "ly2dvi
myfile.ly" should basically do "lilypond myfile.ly;tex myfile.tex" (plus
some extra hand

IOW, you only need to get plain xdvi and recompile that (the version
i have been informed by a colleague that kdvi under KDE also supports
point and click with emacs. he was using it with normal LaTeX files, but
i assume it will also work with lilypond.
the exact procedure for activating this mechanism in kdvi is documented
in the help-files for kdvi.

I had indeed been using the -P param. with ly2dvi, and
that would give me the errors (see earlier postings).
I'll try what you suggest when I get home. For now I
shall occupy myself with working on the .ly file, now
that I know I'll be able to get what I want! :-)

I've searched the lilypond.ps file for how to code a
fermata, but I don't see it. I suppose if it were me,
I'd put it in the section "Expressive marks."
Where did I miss it?
