I am trying to export directly from LilyPond to png, with just the cropped
snippet of music, and not something on an entire A4 piece of paper.
Thoughts? Here's something I tried before, and I know I missing something:

You might try the brute-force method:

page-count = #1
% system-count = #4
}
I often use page-count (and \break at appropriate places) to save myself
many trials.
If this does not solve the problem there are lots of other settings in
the paper block to experiment with.
