In build/INSTALL.txt: Guile (http://www.gnu.org/software/guile/guile.html) (1.8.2 or newer) I interpreted the or newer using the plain meaning of the text, that newer is not circumscribed to the 1.8 branch of guile. I recall seeing the same in the user manual. lilypond/configure has a switch:
