to supply voice or shift information :

The same can happen with tuplet brackets.
And it also happens when using -dpreview.
IMO this is a bug.

It's a hack, but as far as I know there isn't a way to tell LilyPond there
is something there.

When I use lilypond-book to add an example with cross-staff beaming, the
slurs that run under the bottom staff get cut off. Is there a way to either
automatically detect that the slurs are there and not cut them off or

I would also do what Simon suggested. If you need additional voices
temporarily, you can still do so and continue the first voice with your
phrasing slur and add a new voice next to it:

I could not open the miditoly.pl file. but that is no problem. At first I
will try the conversion with LilyPond. If that doesn't work (good enough)
