Hi Elaine,
Thanks so much for this. I am studying all the different helpful approaches
here. Most appreciated.

OK. So my previously posted MWE for string quartet with parts used tags and
multiple books in one file. I found that edition-engraver and page-layout
do their work and stop after the first book. Consequently have found that

Hi Karl,
Thanks for your great help. I am studying the matter!
Just for now I am interested in persisting with something close to my
original approach, until I find out definitively it is just plain
blockheaded!

May I update it to make not the literal text of an email thread but remove

Hi Urs, I had a moment of free time and converted it to (what I think) is

Hi Urs,
More work shows that \applyConditionalBreaks only works on the first \book
in a score. So, either my structure is faulty, with multiple books in a
file, or page-layout cannot be used in this way. The same seesm to apply
for edition-engraver.
What then is the proper structure for parts
Hi Urs,
Edution-engraver is great, and page-layout is great. Thanks!
For my case at the moment, I think the page-layout module is the simplest.
But I can't see how to get the parts working. In the MWE I supplied, I
tried putting the \applyConditionalBreaks in every spot I could, but I
can't get

Well, "an error" - to be precise, this code
1) compiles successfully
2) gives the intended output
3) causes Lilypond to give a warning.
I wasn't surprised by 3)
