Thanks, Joram. This is helpful.

Hi;
I'm still looking for a 64bit MacOS Lilypond 2.22. I tried the
32bit version and it fails to run (obviously).
I'm running MacOS 11.1 (Big Sur) on Intel 64bit CPU (not the Apple M1 chip).
Meanwhile I will continue to use Lilypond version 2.20.
Thanks,

It is a false characterization to say versions later than 2.18 are
'incomprehensible'. The developers go to enormous lengths to make sure
old code works, at the expense of some incompatible syntax changes,
which are easily understood, and there is convert-ly to help you.

Hello Giles;
Thank you very much for the suggestion to use \partcombineApart and
\partcombineAutomatic.
It works great!
I really must have totally missed this in the documentation.
I will also try using voices explicitly so increase my Lilypond
knowledge/experience as that was what I

Do I have to abandon partcombine and use the
<< {} \\ {} >>
construct to obtain what I want?
You can insert a \partcombineApart in the beginning of lh_one and
restore the default behaviour m25 with a \partcombineAutomatic, when
there are no more rests.
lh_one = \relative f {
Thank you both, I didn't mention that it was a win10 machine now but
mingw did the trick.

Hello-
I'm afraid I'm going to get keelhauled for this. But is there a
link/site where I can download 2.18.2 for win10.
I've never understood after getting really comfortable with this version
all the changes that make it to me incomprehensible and with a new
computer (today) need to get lily
Hi David,
you are looking for markup-system-spacing:
\paper {
markup-system-spacing.basic-distance = #10
}
Flexible vertical spacing \paper variables:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.20/Documentation/notation/flexible-vertical-spacing-paper-variables
Cheat Sheet:
Thank you! I could have sworn I tried almost exactly that and got
errors. But this does work!
And thanks for the amazingly quick response!

Greetings David,
You can invoke the \column and \vspace commands inside markup, like this:
\header {
piece = \markup \column {
"blah blah"
\vspace #2
}
}

Is there a way to put some space between the header material and the
first staff? None of my searching as produced anything relevant.
Here's an example:
-
\version "2.20.0"
\include "english.ly"
\score {
{
c''' c''' c''' c'''
}
}
\header {
piece = "blah blah blah blah

To answer my own question: No, it can't be fixed as outlined above.
Reason is that the order of events at a given moment is not specified.
This means that it is not possible to make a reliable
