I think you have the easiest way there. You could do something like \markup

things get far uglier

It seems as if you just found one of the features that differ between
version 2.8 and 2.9. I don't know any details but it's probably related to
Erik's major revision of the front end of LilyPond.
One simple solution that works well in both 2.8 and 2.9 is:

Is that of any use? You can use LaissezVibrerTieColumn #'X-extent to

Howdy,
I'm using a TextSpanner over a linebreak. I've
modified it using:
\once \override TextSpanner #'shorten-pair = #'(-7

This causes there to be a gap in the textspanner at

This gap disappears if I remove the shorten-pair

I hesitate to call this a bug, as I'm not sure if
there's some reason that this functionality is intended.
Example 1:

The fingering is printed above the notes, no matter

Example 2:
\set
Consider:
\once \override TextSpanner #'edge-text =
#'("CVIII" . "")
s8\startTextSpan s8 s4 ss\stopTextSpan

This makes the TextSpanner too far to the right for
my taste, so I move it with:
\override TextSpanner #'extra-offset = #'(-2 .

However, the line of the spanner is now too
