OK. Here's the output with --verbose. The calling shell script is now
%%% SHELL SCRIPT START %%%
#! /bin/sh
export LILYPOND_DESTDIR=`pwd`
export
GS_LIB="/Applications/LilyPond.app/Contents/Resources/share/ghostscript/8.50/lib"
date
python "/Applications/LilyPond.app/Contents/Resources/lilycall
Try to add --verbose to the call to LilyPond, to get a more informative
error message. Clearly, Ghostscript fails, but
it's hard to tell why from the current printouts.

If I'm calling
lilypond -b eps myfile.ly
then "myfile.eps" is the whole page

I've added this under general lilypond arguments. Can this be used in
lilypond-book? I can't see a -d option for -book.

Hello,
I am somewhat at a loss. I want to generate an Encapsulated PostScript

Section "Running LilyPond", --> 12.1 Invoking lilypond --> 12.1.1
Command line options.
And there I find that I can put --backend=eps, --ps so that I
