It would be nice if LilyPond were able to resolve every possible
fingering configuration optimally, but it is a complex problem.
Generally, the options available work pretty

This is a problem for me as well. I prefer my fingerings to the left of
notes and chords in the score (for guitar music) and when notating
chords that contain seconds, I'm forced to choose which notes to
indicate fingerings for in order to avoid collisions. Another related
problem: In chords
A further problem (seems to me to qualify as a bug) is that if I have two
adjacent notes in a chord, I can't place one fingering indication to the
left and the other to the right. Up/down works ok, but left/right or
right/left places both indications on the right:

Thanks, that works. However, I didn't see anything in the
documentation that would have given me a clue that the

My guess is that \set FingeringOrientations only works for chord
constructs, whereas plain fingerings don't require this.
Valentin, modify the snippet controlling the placement of chord
fingerings accordingly to give this warning.

Yes. There is a boxed warning in the fingering section
of the Learning Manual.
It's in the learning manual s4.4.2. Pg 103 of the 2.12.2 PDF.
I got tripped up by this as well when I started...
