Plus, using numbers instead of literal indications can sometimes be
more precise: in my opera I use

I thought that the documentation generator (IIRC a scheme script) could
handle this. Now I can see, that this is not the case as RehearsalMark
contains the definition of (direction . ,UP) and it is still displayed as 1.

One way is to use the \mark command. This is normally used
for rehearsal marks, and the key point is that it is
positioned relative to the barline. The horizontal
adjustment can be varied from left-aligned to right-aligned
by setting self-alignment-X. Left-aligned is -1,
right-aligned
