I'm not quite sure how to construct an example--I'm working on my scoring
for rock/funk band, and I have everything under control due to the great
help I've received here.
One final sticking point is that I like to mark repeat signs underneath
with a "2x" or "4x"

Yes, welcome. Forgive me for sounding harsh. but asking about a

Hi Piers,
You can't just make up barlines. Please read the NR, Section 1.2.5 for 2.21.6.
New bar line types can be defined with \defineBarLine.
And, um, are you seriously using 2.16.2? Why? That is so utterly out
of date that I am shocked. Even stable version 2.18 has been out for
so many years

Hi,
I probably don't understand all the implications and I am certainly not
suggesting to change the function signature. But while we are at it:
A definition is usually “name” = “the thing to be defined”.
In the current \defineBarLine function, I always wondered why the first

the big difference is that you can scale it in the \markup where you use it,
e.g.
\markup {

\fontsize #-4 \bar-line #".|:"
}
will render two differently sized

this seems much better than the solution with \markup \score …
also, the resulting bar lines are scalable!

don't you let Lilyponds built-in functions take place!?
\repeat volta 2 { … } \repeat volta 2 { … } already sets the correct bars!
with more than one \bar override Lilypond will only print the last bar
instruction encountered.

Depending on context, a particular begin-repeat sign or end-repeat sign will
