I think I followed the instructions in http://lilypond.org/web/install/windows.html correctly, but Lilypond outputs an empty pdf. For installation I used the "Download Without Installing" option, and then ran Setup again and used the "Install from Local Directory" option. Here's the test.log: --

At MIT, we have a bunch of centrally maintained redhat machines. As far as I can tell, the central system decided to install guile1.3. It removed my guile1.4, and put in a 1.3. When I removed it and reinstalled 1.4, everything worked again. Thanks for all your suggestions. rif _

I noticed in the digest someone talking about Lilypond for Mac working on an external disk but not on the internal one - it is possible that they are formatted differently. The Mac offers various filesystems, some of which are case insensitive and some which are not! It may be informative to check

The hard disc format is determined by the type of processor you have in the machine: GUID format for Intel chips, MacOS Extended for PPC chips. I have a G4 [PPC] chip, so both Ext. and Int. are formatted with MacOS Extended. The EXTERNAL has a different system, 10.4.11, under which LilyPond
