The following code works:
\version 2.19.15
\score {
\new staff {
\key c \major
\time 4/4
\clef bass
r2. g g'4 | c g c, d2\rest
}
}
What does not work is r2. g g‘4_ | ?
What is wrong?

The reason it doesn't work is that you cannot put the duration within
the chord brackets:
g g'4 and not g g'4

Dear Bernhard,
the input that does not work is:
r2. g g‘4_
because there is a g‘ and not a g' (mind the apostrophe), the duration
is inside the chord which makes no sense and there is no articulation.
Did you mean this?
{ r2. g g'4- }
HTH,
Joram
... or if you really want to put a greater sign there (which I would not
recommend, because it is no aritculation), you would have to mark it as
text:
{ r2. g g'4- }
