Evince wasn't so helpful in telling me what
was going wrong so I tried xpdf, as suggested
by the manual.
Xpdf shows the url as being something like:
textedit:///tmp/amadomio.ly:137:5:1
which becomes:
lilypond-invoke-editor /tmp/a
