If it is possible to insert comments into a midi file, could lyrics be inserted as comments? That's probably all there is to making a .kar file, since timidity plays them and dumps the lyrics to the console quite well. You'll find some documentation of this format at

i've enclosed the midi file i get when i generate the score. i've also included an archive of the .ly files used. the midi output was working with timidity and my sound-card perfectly, until my score reached a certain size and amount of instruments. when i investigated which instruments
