*Masks now optional in the Lincoln Public Library*

The Lincoln Board of Health (BOH) voted to rescind the town-wide indoor
mask mandate effective Monday, March 14, 2022, in response to substantially
improved and positively trending public health data, including Lincoln’s
high vaccination rate.

Residents with weakened immune systems or at increased risk of severe
Covid-19 disease because of age or medical conditions, or who have a
household member at such increased risk, are advised by the Lincoln BOH and
the Commonwealth’s Department of Public Health (DPH) to continue to wear a
mask when indoors other than in their home, even if they are vaccinated.

We encourage the public to continue to wear masks in accordance with their
own comfort level and in compliance with the DPH guidelines cited above.
Private establishments may continue to *require masks upon entry.*

*Updated indoor mask use recommendation as of April 14, 2022*: “Due to
recent data showing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases, the Board of
Health members voted last night to strongly recommend that people wear
masks in public indoor spaces until early May as we see how the infection
rate from the new BA-2 variant evolves over the next few weeks after spring
vacation.”

IN PERSON: Abraham Lincoln and Massachusetts
<https://lincolnpl.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/abraham-lincoln-and-massachusetts/>

*Thursday, April 6, 7:00pm – 8:30pm*

*Tarbell Room, Lincoln Public Library*

When we think about Abraham Lincoln’s origins, we naturally turn to
Illinois, Indiana and even Kentucky, where he and his immediate forebears
lived – but hardly Massachusetts. Surprisingly, our 16th President had
strong and compelling connections to the state of Massachusetts. We will
hear that story and how Lincoln’s family heritage provided a backdrop for
what was to come.

A key event in Lincoln’s life was an 1848 trip to Massachusetts which, as
Lincoln himself described it, was his “first trip over the mountains” made
while he “was still picking the hayseed out of my hair.” He addressed, with
much acclaim, a Whig convention in Worcester, Massachusetts where he so
impressed powerful party leaders that he was invited to dinner the next
evening at Governor Levi Lincoln’s home. The story of that auspicious
dinner and its unintended results is worth the retelling because it
perfectly illustrates how one seminal event spurred Lincoln’s emotional and
political growth, leading to his election as 16th President of the United
States.

*About the Guest Speaker*

Justice Dennis J. Curran (ret.) served as a Massachusetts trial judge for
15 years. He received four statewide awards for his deep commitment and
belief in the justice system and dedication to the law. He is a popular and
engaging lecturer who was recently featured on a history panel broadcast on
C-SPAN 2, and has lectured extensively before historical and educational
groups, and fellow judges. He has been a regular speaker at the
Wellesley-Weston Lifetime Learning program for the past three years. He has
had a lifelong passion for history. He was elected a Fellow of the
Massachusetts Historical Society, a member of the Board of Directors of the
nationally respected Lincoln Forum and was recently selected to present at
History Camp – America, where 550 history enthusiasts gather in an annual
conference.

Justice Curran’s present passion is teaching. He has served as a Professor
of the Practice at Tufts University and currently teaches in the
Summer@BrownUniversity program.
