the Clipboard ... is a single entity.
It works for me to & from external apps.
As for the number of chars, you can count those before & after ...

As of Director 8, you can mark the 'Enable Edit Shortcuts' checkbox
on the Movie tab of the Property Inspector.
Then the standard shortcut keys can be used for cut/copy/paste within
that movie after it's been projectorized or Shocked.
