OK, so the problem was that you didn't include the GIF Xtra. When you 
put the media (a GIF image) in the .dir file that you make a 
projector from, the Xtra is included automatically (upon doing 
'Create Projector').

If the media type is not present in the projector file, but rather in 
a file that the projector branches to, you need to add the Xtra by 
hand.
