At a former employer a couple of years ago, I bought 8 drives with I think that
same problem in firmware.
The solution was to install the firmware upgrade.
I don't know if that let's you recover the drive, or if it only allows you to
prevent the problem.

Neil - try booting the box with a linux "live" cd and see if it
recognizes your hard drive. You can download such a CD here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD
(although there are many other variants of course)
