as a followup, i did a dist-upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10, then to 13.04, and the only issue i had was being briefly unable to log into the desktop due to some strange, new feature involving passwordless logins to the desktop. once i fixed that, everything's just worked. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P.
