+1 on all the advice so far.
I use separate partitions for /home on all my home machines.
Ubuntu and pretty much all other distros offer an optional install path that
allows you to choose to mount some other drive or partition as /home.
Just be sure to uncheck the "format" option!

Regarding that last operation of editing configuration files: "meld" is
your friend. Also, I comment each manual change in a config file with
easily-located text: my username in CAPS and a brief reason for the

I won't consider doing a upgrade because 13.10 is not a Long term Support
release I would wait for 14.04(Trusty Tahr) April 2014

this is very old but it is very stable: It survived a move across the
Pacific and I've had uptime up to 200 days: I only turn it off when we
go on holidays.
