I don't think using a journaling filesystem would cure this problem. A bad magic indicates that the super-block was trashed. One can use an alternate super-block, but I don't remember how to do this. Since the system hung I suspect some kind of memory corruption caused the kernel to scribble

While you're in "maintenance mode" you should be able to modify /etc/fstab to remove the entry for the volume that is failing. That will allow you to get your system up the rest of the way and have your normal set of tools available to look at/fix the problem. If you're concerned about losing dat
