I have verified that I can ftp and read from the server. I'm unware of a readme that instructs you to merge all CDs into a single directory. The release notes indicate that you copy CD1 to sles9-s390/CD1 CD2 to core-9/CD1 CD3 to core-9/CD2 CD4 to core-9/CD3 CD5 to core-9/CD4 CD6 to core-9/CD5 sym

As Jim pointed out, cpint is only useful on z/VM systems. Still, that should not cause modprobe to hang (I would think). I haven't looked at the source code to see if the module even cares if it is running on z/VM or not. It might. You might try commenting out that modprobe command before
