That's pretty much what I was thinking.
I wasn't sure if Linux had some sort of locking facility for shared files
like VSE or MVS.

Does anyone know if there is a supported version of the lin_tape Linux
device driver for SUSE LINUX 10 SP2?
The file lin_tape_359X_zSeries.ReadMe on
ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/Linux
only shows support up to SP1, kernel 2.6.16.46-0.12.
