z/VM is world's best virtualization engine! IMHO, of course.
A good thing to have would be a tool to take full disk backups of the
virtual machines. We were using VM: Backup to backup our CMS disks and
have added the Lin-z systems to its plate. It is a convenient restore
method for when I do

Hi Mark,
RACF defines various tables in assembly language that need to be
assembled and linked in.
HLASM is listed as a prerequisite for RACF in the RACF specifications.
However, HLASM has become a for-charge product in VM (it used to be
free there too.)

Thanks Alan!
I have to admit to being a little ignorant on the details.
I was just reporting what folks at IBM and our customers
had told us... (hence my somewhat vague answer to
Mark's question :-) )

Dave:
While HLASM used to be pre-installed with VM, it was never
no-charge. You needed a license to enable it. It is shipped at
no-charge (i.e. bundled) in z/OS however.

DFSMS/VM is not a product but a function included in the z/VM base.

Yes, but for some releases you had to request it. It was preloaded by
default on z/VM 4.4, but it was not shipped on the z/VM 5.1 product tape
unless it was requested.
It has been restored (AFAIK) in the z/VM 5.2

Actually, it must be installed from the SDO. DFSMS/VM was removed from
the base system awhile ago. It is still

The RSCS license will allow you to send files and messages to CMSBATCH and
interact with PROP to do commands, but there is no direct support for TWS.
The IBM Batch Facility for CMS might also be
I'm curious. Why does RACF require that you have HLASM (or your
replacement)?
Note that I've never worked on an MVS system that didn't have an
assembler, so I've never paid much attention to what needed it or not.
