I'm training a new collegue to help me in linux and z/VM on mainframe. My
collegue has no knowledge in mainframe hardware, linux or z/VM, except the
training that I have given him.
I'm pretty much a newbie myself in z/VM and zlinux, so I'm looking for

Samir,
I'm looking for books dat he can use as a reference and for self-study,
especially for zlinux.
Most people learn by doing. If you have access to an LPAR, z/VM, Linux,
some DASD and IP addresses, you can go through the steps in the
Virtualization Cookbooks. There is one for Novell's SLES

I guess about 6 - 8 months ago, I read a document, perhaps a redbook,
redpiece...concerning IBM 3590 tape drives and Linux on the mainframe.
I made a mental note about it as we were in the process of getting a
couple 3590s.
Now it is time to try to use the 3590s with Linux and my mental note
Does anybody know how I get the SUSE Linux 8.0 Administration Guide for
s/390. We can't find it at the SUSE web site.
Try htp://www.redbooks.ibm.com and search for Linux.

Well, actually you can. You need a copy of a handy little gadget
called 'ansitape'. You can get a copy from:
I would like to know what the membership's experience is on Linux's
performance on the mainframe as compared to Intel. We have a small LPAR
for Linux (10% cap on CPU) + 1GM memory. But it way underperforms Linux on
Intel. However neither has been stressed with many users.

For what purpose? If you're trying to solve computational problems, then

Phil,
How much do you expect a writer to absorb in one email? I didn't feel like
giving him the equivalent of a post-doc in Linux/390. He wasn't worth my
time.

I must be having a good day, then. I'm not usually accused of being too
