By the way, Knoppix uses Debian sid, and is overall considered to be a
very good demonstration of Linux' capabilities, both in features and in
stability. I don't think it would have gotten the recognition it has, if
people would have found it buggy or unstable.

This is a nice coincidence, because I just installed Debian Sid
('unstable') on my home workstation.
I am also a convinced Debian user, and all the servers and workstations
I administrate are Debian Woody ('stable'). Now, recently, I have seen

Try gentoo. It is the reasons you describe why I switched. I get the
latest updates as soon as there available. Sometimes, I can't wait and
just update the ebuild scripts (you'll read about them on the web site:

Hi,
I am somewhat new to Linux low-level development. I have developed for
other UNIX systems before, and also for Windows NT and for JavaCard
compatible smartcards.
I have used (and enjoyed) Debian for a long time as a Linux user and for
web development. Getting into low-level development, I
Is anyone seeing problems with SCHED_FIFO thread priority and the new
threading model in the 2.5/2.6 kernel? I read that the mode isn't
supported. But it (or something that works like it) is fundamentally
important to my Linux audio application. My audio thread has gotta have

I'll give it another shot then, disabling the kudzu-probing (using an Emagic

Has anyone successfully compiled a recent 2.5 kernel using gcc 3.2-7 (Redhat

Hi!
I've been doing some early 2.5 tests, but as I'm running RH8 with the Planet
on top of it there seem to be some problems actually building a 2.5 kernel
(the linked texts here mention optimization problems with the default
RH-shipped gcc as one). So far I haven't been ab
