There are other subtleties that apply to an automixer, but this is
enough to get started.

your method different than DRC? Does Aliki use ALSA or JACK for I/O?
I'll have a look at the code tonight but I was hoping you could fill me
in on the "big picture".
Thanks,

s before there is an influx of professional
interest. Open-source plugins may never sound as good as the best
commercial offerings ( *cough* Harrison *cough* ), but they shouldn't be
allowed to sound BAD, given the wealth of knowledge available in the LAD
group.

Andrew, get the M-Audio Audiophile 2496.
It is well supported and does exactly what you need. You can find them
cheap used.
Be aware the Audiophile 192 is NOT supported.

no "correct" way to do it. You can easily derive a center/sub channel but
most systems do something hideous when it comes to the rear channels.

know, this can't be removed by any sort of electronic correction. With this
setup and some modest room treatment, I've got very low distortion, AND flat
frequency response.

If you haven't tried out Denis' DRC program, you should. I have had great
success with it. I am in the process of documenting my results ... watch

ange back to the M when they are told by
the M what their value is.
You'll also want some logic in the M that says "if I receive a change that
tells me to go to my current value, then don't send updates to anyone".

How about a nicer interface to do synchronized I/O ? Currently the docs say,
in effect: "this is really hard .. just use JACK". I like JACK but there are
someinstances where it is not needed.

Is there an online publication of Mr Farina's findings? Google is not turning
up anything definitive for me.

that the current samples lack "punch" only because they are from a piano
chord response file.

(jack_convolve may already do this for you, I can't check just this moment)
Now when you hit a pad, it should be "convolved" with the response signal
giving you something different than the simple "click" of the input signal.
I'm very interested to see how this works out (I suggested this path to
Olivier, I hope it's not totally worthless :) ). It could be a way to build
a cheap, responsive electronic drum kit that preserves the nuances of the
input signal. I wonder if this is how the Korg Wavedrum worked?

station for a while now. How are you planning to do all this,
through jack.udp? If so, it'd be nice if somebody wrote a gui or
something to control jack.udp, I was thinking about doing this, but have
been too distracted with radio stuff to devote much time towards it.

at all.
Pretty impressive though that my g4 1.5ghz could handle all that. All
this would probably work better on an intel system though?

I've been trying to get oddcast to work the past couple days, but keep
running into this problem
ringbuffer full, tried to write 4096, but wrote 0
its
working for our radio
station. But if not oddcast, does anybody know if there is any other gnu
mp3 encoders out there (darkice?) that are jack compatible. Seems like
the darkice guy has been working on livesupport, which I can't wait to
see in action.

do audio work, is that it the poweredge makes
about as much noise as a 747. So... its not exactly an audio production
friendly unit.
So these are my thoughts. Am I crazy... or is there some magical way to
make this happen?

Regarding the fan display, how do you handle the case where the fader

Sounds interesting. This is what I do for a living. But would any of
the linux audio developers actually follow it?

aw says your first 2 guesses will be wrong. The app
"Soundplay" for BeOS takes a novel approach ... the level is shown as a
knob but when you grab it, a rectangular box appears behind the knob
and you adust it like a fader. This is great because it gives you
visual feedback of which direction(s) to move the knob.

Implementation is easy if you design for it... just stream all your internal variables

bjbDon't try to drive me crazy...

with some sort of software sync workaround
you could knock together a simple 8 channel thing for $60 or so using
PCI64s. Although that's nothing like as good as a 1010, it is 10% of the
price.
Cheers,
Ben
