I've inherited a legacy FAI configuration. Currently it's running FAI
2.8.4. We're thinking of upgrading to 2.10.x at some point, but
before that we need to completely understand everything that FAI is
currently doing for us.

The fai-kernels are only used at install time! Are you sure you need
the bootsplash
Basically the cd will serve as an installation for training stuff. so
there will be few packages as required for the training and will work
on dell, IBM and some intel based systems with minimum support for
specific hardware (ethernet, sound etc)
