In previous fai versions, softupdate worked without -N after a fresh
install. In 3.1.8 "fai softupdate" gives me the following error:

upgrade", not a "dist-upgrade".

There's an apt config option for this.
You could make sure in a hook that is is set before the apt update takes
place:

fai softupdates calls task_updatebase which does
aptitude full-upgrade which is the same as dist-upgrade.

Die Frage ist also eher: Soll dann abgebrochen werden oder soll
der Wert ignoriert werden. Das ist eine Designentscheidung, wobei
ich zu ersterem tendiere: Wenn es einen fatalen Fehler in einem
hook gibt, sollte FAI abbrechen.

after having managed to implement diskless clients (with great help
from this list, thanks!), I thought how to update the chroot in a
nice way. Of course it would be prefered to do it in a way easy to
remember for the sysadmin, comparable to 'fai softupdate' like it&
se fails.
Softupdates are designed to run on an installed and booted system.
Basically you log in as root and type "fai -N softupdate". Thus the
filesystems are already mounted when the system booted.
From your description it seems that you have booted FAI in the same way
as for install
