I'm renting some cheap boxes from a provider that won't offer anything except a standard bundle. This includes a single network card + net connection and nothing else.

How sensible is it to attempt a DRBD setup using two of these boxes? What ways might it actually go split brain if I put some thought into using pinging of some external node to decide if the other node is down versus the network itself going down? Seems that with some judicious network interrogation (pinging internal switches + external hosts) it would be possible to make the worst case that both machines fence themselves off (needing manual recovery) rather than going split brain?

Anyone had any success doing this?
