The "X server" actually runs on your Windows workstation. With xming, you run the xming software on your Windows workstation, then launch hb_gui on the Linux server, but the graphical display appears on your Windows desktop. You do NOT need the Linux box to be at runlevel 5, and run the X server itself. You only need some X libraries packages. X forwarding is normally extremely simple to use, and you only need to select the option in the putty session configuration. All sane Linux distros are configured to work out of the box in this fashion.
