Could it be that a firewall is blocking incomming contections to either
the port or the protocol used?

You didn't post your /etc/fstab, but I'll try to guess anyway: Your
system probably has a cdrom. If so, /dev/hdc might be pointing to it
instead

I find it very unlikely that there's no way to configure your switch. I think
all modern hubs/switche
