1) It is not a Linux problem. 2) Instead of buying the fastest CD-ROM, by a good one (my Toshiba x 40 cost 50 Sheqels more then Unknown x 50, but it is GOOD). 3) Try to change the "read ahead" or some sound-like parameters. If you will Increase your buffer then maybe it won't try to alloca

no, it didn't only make the noise on xmms, it only stopped making the noise on xmms. if i "ls /mnt/cdrom" for example then it does make that noise. i guess it is only some reconfiguration of the buffers in xmms. jets taking off can sound like tractors, i guess ,if their take off lasts longer than

On the other hand, MY 24x toshiba couldn't grab audio in a satisfying speed, couldn't read some of the CD-Rs and broke down 3 times within the warrany period. I have a second drive (which is a 12x CyberDrive) which still works to this very day. How about that? --
