I still feel like sharing my great experience you on a related
topic. :-)
I have recently converted to using scons (www.scons.org) for most
of my compilation needs both in Win32 and in Linux and it is wonderful.

I'm managing a project with automake. Currently installed on my machine
is automake 1.7.9.
In some regards, this is just great. At close to zero cost I get out of
tree builds, total dependency tracking, install + DESTDIR, uninstall,
