Can't get dosemu to run

Hello list, I have installed dosemu-1.2.2-bin.tgz and dosemu-freedos-b9r5-bin.tgz per instructions in README.bindist. It is installed on a Slackware 12.0 box with the 2.6.21 kernel. The dosemu script won't run. I get the error: ./dosemu: line 404: exec: --: invalid option exec: usage:
