You may have a firewall problem. ftp is one of the "problem" services that
requires special handling by firewalls, or even use of passive mode only by
the client. Can you connect to the ftp server from onsite?

I have a very basic problem which is pretty much the same under all the
versions of linux I use.
Occasionally, when I try and eject a CD, the system complains that it is
in use, even although I have definitely stopped us
