Here's your problem. You must have a bios on that computer that has a
date on or after July 1, 1989. If you don't have or can't get such a bios
on that machine working happily it doesn't matter what you do with any usb
technology it's simply not going to work for you. Many unethical computer

A swap file, once created, can be left.
However, you will need to restart swap upon each boot.
Perhaps a rc.local script command will do.

Hi Ray and Paul,
thanks for your interest.
I investigated a little bit deeper, but am stil clueless:

PCMCIA CAN-Card which was innocently sitting in my cardslot for months.
Maybe it received a different configuration when

Errors (errormessages), no, but the system hangs like before.

You don't give us much to go on, but since the problems seem to be with
name resolution, I'd suggest you tell us the details of your system as they
relate to that.
First is your networking setup. Are you connected to a LAN or directly to
the internet? (I guess you must be if you are using MapQu
Here's yet another set of questions to look at :)
1. If you change /etc/init.tab so that the system boots into run level
3, then reboot, do you get any errors?
2. If not, try logging in as a user and running "startx" to see what
errors you get (if any) on the terminal.
3. It sounds like you have
Four questions about what you posted ...
1. In the "good init" sequence, what happens next? You're asking us to
compare a bad init to nothing (as regards the part that is bad).
2. When you say the system "hangs" and "freezes", how carefully have you
assessed that? How long have you waited befor

For the owner, it has to be u+x, of course...

Hi everybody!
I have this problem:
I should put USB port on an older box, that has no
USB on its mainboard.
I thought about an USB PCI card, but have no any
experience with them.
Are they completely supported, or what should I
check befor buying one of them?
And the other question: how should I s
Hi NG,
for a couple of days, my Suse Linux 8.1 (2.4.19) on a HP Omnibook XE3 Laptop
shows a strange behaviour: it hangs after a reboot (shutdown -r now od from
KDE). First it starts as usual, but freezes after "switching to runlevel

Chuck - that swapfile: has it to be created anew just before any
prog/app is run ? Or could I just leave it "on" ?
Well, and then - can I conclude from this that a swap _partition_ is
basically used like a file ?
(Or else: would programs which need swap create their _specific_ files
