thanks, but Lawson has already solved this - I can't read! I hadn't
created /dev/ppp because I kept reading the Changes file as "if you are
using devfs" when it actually says "if you are NOT using devfs". Sigh.

What version of pppd?
Do you have /dev/ppp?
Does it work if you insert the relevant ppp modules by hand first
(ppp_generic, ppp_async)?

I'll give these aliases a try in a day or so. I have to say, though, that
I'm not that hopeful - I usually try to configure ppp support in to the
kernel, rather than using modules. When the connection has been made, kppp
tries to negotiate a protocol, then fai

I'm crazy, sorry, the solution is very easy:
Kernel 2.4.2 need PPP version 2.4.0 or higher and my system have installed the
2.3.11 version.
