It seems that you are using the wrong combination of RAID patch end RAID tools.
If you want to use the Ingo patch (i.e. the 0.90 RAID layer) you need the new
raid tools (raidtools2_0.90.990824-5.deb or any more recent version), and at
the same time is a good idea to update also the lilo package.
I've only tried to build a RAID 1 system following the documentation, and it's
quite straightforward...
