I've used amanda extensively in a variety of configurations. I've also
evaluated budtools and legato networker, so I feel compelled to comment.

Amanda is an impressive solution. Like many open source packages, it
is (apparently) more difficult to install, but it pays off in the long
run. The things that make amanda so much better than the competition
are the things that most people fail to consider when evaluating a
backup solution.

One of the most powerful aspects of amanda is that it uses the operating
systems' core backup utilities (dump, tar, cpio) to do the actual data
backup/restore, so it is completely ambivalent to the backup format and
OS. Additonally, amanda has a highly motivated group of core developers,
so support is excellent.

I'd be more than happy to provide more details upon request.
