I went thru the same upgrade path as yourself over the weekend, except
that i'm using kernel 2.2.3, and I converted from raid1 to raid0 in
the process, everything went well. (knocking on wood)

Remember to take out the raidrun/raidstop lines in the rc.sysinit and
halt scripts... 

As far as back-up/reconstruct/re-install, that's what I did..
