This has buggin me for years now...

Specifically, can anyone explain why there is no iostat for
linux??  It appears a (at least a partial) implementation
would require some rather trivial parsing of /proc/stat.

If there is no iotstat for linux, how does one inspect to see
if a system is I/O bound??

I did some searches and found "Linux-kernel-digest Tuesday, 7
October 1997 Volume 01 : Number 1211" includes a patch against
a "iostat.c" for reporting on > 4 disks.  But I can't find any
mention of the actual iostat.c!!
