Two things.
First, my conclusion that half the display engine is useless is
completely bogus.
After my talk several folks (Tsvetan and Net147) were amazed, as they
were happily using hdmi with a panel or hdmi with vga. A wiki page was
created with a working setup for some VGA enabled devices
