Workaround found via a lot of googling for similar issues: basically,
tell it not to use uas.
/etc/modprobe.d/ignore_uas.conf:
options usb-storage quirks=059f:1062:u
As I'm on Ubuntu this was followed by
sudo update-initramfs -u
Works fine now...
