Apple used to use gcc, or rather their own fork of it, up to version 4.2. Then they started transitioning to llvm/clang, and these days don't ship gcc. 'gcc' exists as a symlink for compatibility. >gcc version 4.2.1 (Based on Apple Inc. build 5658) (LLVM build 2336.11.00) Between the transition, there was also 'llvm gcc' which is a hybrid with the gcc front end and llvm backend, that's the above.
